요즘 들어서 정말 꽂힌 노래다.
초장부터 날카롭게 치고 들어오는 베이스와 영국적 우수,
동유럽의 그것과는 상이한 그런 멜로디가 흐르는 인트로에서 이미 나의 구미를 당겼다.
이제는 장마철이 끝났지만, 한창 장맛비가 간헐적으로 퍼붓곤 했었던 지난 시간동안
이 노래를 들으면서 현대적인 건물이 우후죽순으로 세워져 있는 강남을 걷다보니
나름대로 도시적인 운치가 느껴졌다고 해야 할까.
제임스 블레이크만의 멜랑콜리한 보이스와 모지스 섬니의 저 세상(?!) 쥐어짜는 소울의 하모니가 기가 막힌다.

이 부분에서 정말 제대로 소름 돋아버렸다. 사실 제임스 블레이크 목소린 줄 알았는데,
알고 보니 모지스 섬니의 보이스였던 것이다. 와 이 가수 도대체 뭐지 하면서 다른 곡도 들어봤는데,
세상에 마상에 어째서 난 이제서야 이 사람을 알게 된 것인가 땅을 치며 지난 세월을 한탄했다.
즉, 이 노래를 듣기 전 모지스 섬니를 그냥 R&B 가수, 그 이상으론 알지는 못했지만,
이 노래를 듣고 잠에 들지 못했다. 이것 저것 듣느라.
가사의 뜻을 알고나서 단순히 쥐어짜는 애절함이 아니라는 것을 느꼈다.
일종의 사악함, 간악함, 조롱 등이 섞인 악마의 목소리였던 것이다.
또 다른 해석 방향이 있다면, 제 2의 자아의 두려움, 절규가 섞였다고 볼 수도 있을 것이다.
자신을 조롱하면서도, 그런 자신의 모습이 두려운 것,
언제 떠나갈 지 모르는 악마, 즉 또 다른 자아를 두려워하는 것.
이렇게 가사의 뜻을 알고 나니 더욱이 모지스 섬니의 목소리가 달리 들렸다
